A local SEO checklist for service businesses

Published 6 October 2026 · CANSEO editorial

Keep your location, service information, and enquiry routes consistent across the places customers use.

Describe your actual coverage

List the areas you serve and explain any limitations. A location page should contain useful local information, such as access, services available, operating hours, or contact details. Replacing a city name in an otherwise identical page does not make it valuable.

Use real photographs where they help people recognise the location. Avoid inventing branches, local teams, or office addresses to appear in more places.

Check the basics together

Compare the business name, address, phone number, website, and opening hours on your site with your business listings. Correct old contact details and explain holiday changes. Different formats are less important than conflicting information that causes a wasted visit.

Give visitors a clear way to confirm availability. Where a service is appointment-only, say so before inviting someone to travel.

Build useful local evidence

Publish practical answers based on actual customer questions. Examples could include parking instructions, service boundaries, required documents, or what happens during a first visit. Update the page when operations change.

If displaying customer feedback, obtain permission where appropriate and represent it accurately. Do not invent reviews or copy testimonials from another business. Explain the context of a case study without exposing personal information.

Measure enquiries with context

Track which channels produce enquiries and whether those enquiries match the service offered. Use an agreed definition of a qualified enquiry so results remain comparable. A rise in irrelevant enquiries can indicate unclear wording.

Review local pages at regular intervals and after moves, timetable changes, or new service launches. Accurate information is part of the visitor experience, not a one-time SEO setup task.
